Vat Savitri Vrat Puja or Vat Savithri Poornima is a fasting festival observed by Hindu married women in many states of India. Vat Savitri vrat is a fasting ritual observed by women for health and long life of their husbands. This Vrat is come in the Month of June-July. Many people observe this ritual on Amavasya while many people observe this on Poornima. So that, Vat Savitri Vrat also know as Vat Savitri Poornima. In 2010 Year, Vat Savitri Puja come on 12th June and 25th June.

Vat Savitri is related to the story of Princess Savitri. Savitri was the beautiful daughter of King Ashwapati. Savitri was very beautiful and innocent. To discover bridegroom for herself, Savitri went to jungle, where knowledgeable live in ashrams. In forest, Savitri fell in love with Satyavan. Satyavan was a prince living in separate with his blind father Dyumatsen.

When Savitri astrologers told her about Satyavan that he is intended to die within a year, she was shocked. After that Savitri would not step back and marry with Satyavan. As a faithful wife and daughter in-law Savitri took all pains to take care of her husband and his father Dyumatsen, She left the palace an lived in the jungle.

Exactly after one year, One day while Satyawaan cutting wood in the forest Satyawaan head reeled he fell down from the Vad tree (Banyana tree) and then Satyawaan die on the lap of Savitri. At this moment the god of death Yamaraj came to grab Satyawaan’s life. Savitri was Pativrata woman. Savitri deeply hurt pleaded and stopped death of god Yamaraj not to take away a life of her husband Satyawaan.

Savitri also told that she will also die if Yamraj take life of Satyawaan. After Seeing Savitri’s devotion towards her husband, Yamaraj was extremely moved. The god of death Yamaraj returned the life of Satyavan and both lived joyfully thereafter.

Vat Savitri Rituals or How to Observe Vat Savitri Fasting?

Vat Savitri vrat is fasting observed for 1 days. Some women observed fasting for one day or some women fasting for 3 days. Early in the morning women take purificatory bath, wear new cloths, new bangles, apply sindoor (vermilion) on the fore-head and observe fasting. Women together at the nearest banyan trees (Vad tree, Peepal tree). They tie red threads around the banyan tree (Peepal tree) and pray for long life of their husband. Hindu Women also offering fruits and flowers to the banyan tree.

Indian Women also read “Savatri Katha” in the evening and do ritual worship (puja). After that women eat with water. At the end of the vrat, Indian women bow down to their husbands and also take blessings of elderly people in the home.
